Buy American at the Beach

Few American industries have struggled as much as the footwear industry, yet a few shining examples of American determination prevail. New Balance still makes about 30% of its shoes here, so no consumer patriot should be caught strolling with Made in China Reebok’s or Nike’s. Not even Skechers USA makes their shoes here. How misleading can you get? That may settle the score for tennis shoes or walking shoes, but what about those heading to the beach for some fun in the sun as the weather warms up?

Does anyone own a pair of American made flip-flops? I don’t, but that will soon change. Island Slipper has been making flip-flops (sandals) in Hawaii since 1946. You can go to their website at www.islandslipper.com.

Some of these sandals aren’t cheap, but if you were worrying too much about price, you probably wouldn’t be subscribing to this list and would be buying the made in China anyway. Some of their styles are downright classy and fit for a night out on the town or a casual dinner – not just for the beach.

So there you have it. Now you can buy some American made flip flops to go with your American made beach towel (they can still be found) and your American made suntan lotion. And those sunglasses? Oakley’s are made in California.
