It is not easy to write a review of Bill Gertz's "Betrayal: How the Clinton Administration Undermined American Security." On the one hand you find yourself so outraged that you tend to become incoherent in your rush to vent and express your anger. While on the other hand you feel very deeply that for everyone, of all political persuasions, the serious nature of this breach of faith is terribly important. You feel compelled to try desperately to bring all sides to the single understanding that we have indeed been deeply betrayed in a most dangerous way. Yet you know that, of all people, this president has been able to collect to his side a significant number of most willing dupes and sycophants. How do you write this review?

I know that the mere mention of this will further alienate a number of readers, but the Bible does warn that evil will sometimes be visited upon us by men who have the appearance of "angels of light." Which simply means that man has the capacity for great deception as well as an equally deep desire to be deceived. Today we stand a people, a country, betrayed by our elected President, and failed of trust by so many others.

Bill Gertz has presented a multitude of facts, while being hard to compile; he has nevertheless brought to the light and to the view of many. Some of those are:

  • "Russia is embarked on a major strategic nuclear modernization program while, at the same time, the United States is sending over $1 billion to help the Russians 'dismantle' nuclear weapons"
  • "Clinton administration efforts to defend the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty at all costs led to the death of President Reagan's Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI)….Defense Secretary Les Aspin killed what was left of the SDI program as part of a strategic review of U.S. forces." The same Les Aspin who allow our troops in Mogadishu to be trapped in combat, without heavy armor, in which 18 American lives were lost.
  • The U.S. "shipped high performance computers to China by the hundreds - through waivers issued by the president. The Chinese had none…as recently as 1996, but as of 1999 they had some 350…being used by the People's Liberation Army for nuclear weapons design and test simulation."
  • Chinese shipments of nuclear technology, specifically banned by non-proliferation treaty, has been on-going and covered up. These shipments require under U.S. law certain very specific actions. The Clinton administration has kept congress in the dark as long as possible and then lied about the seriousness of the shipments when found out.
  • North Korea has continued its nuclear development program even under an agreement reached with the Clinton administration that essentially paid them to stop. The administration then lied to Congress about the ongoing problem. Coupled with their existing missile technology, one of the most unstable regimes in the world is only years away from having nuclear ICBMs that can target this country.

These facts being known I can not help but agree with the author that " President Clinton's most important legacy will not be his serio-comic sex scandals, but his dead serious disarmament of the United States and his self-serving appeasement of powerful and determined foreign enemies. His flower-child 'can't we all just get along' approach to global power politics has left the nation weakened and vulnerable in a dangerous and hostile world."
